Wexler Associates was retained to design the reuse of buildings 28 and 128 at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. In order to do that, drawings and specifications for exposing and testing the existing structure were prepared. In addition, field observations and testing of the existing foundations and pilling were done. Wexler Associates coordinated the testing work and provided a summary report with recommendations regarding the re-use of the existing structure. A 275,000 sq. ft. food processing facility was designed including office spaces. New floors were inserted into the existing structure. New columns with their independent foundation were designed. Existing columns and beams were used to support the new inserted floors. Other existing columns were removed and replace with new transfer girders in order to facilitate truck traffic. The project is currently being redesigned and will incorporate buildings 117 and 23 in the new scheme.
